Lore

First recorded in 691 CE, it was used in the periodic shrine relocation rituals dedicated to Amaterasu and Toyouke. Preserved within the Grand Shrine, it is rarely displayed to the public. Its precursor was the five-colored thin silk offering—blue, red, white, black, and yellow—commonly presented in Shinto rites, each color corresponding to one of the Five Elements.
