Around 2500 BC, Mesopotamians discovered transparent glassy material while firing ceramic glazes, while Egyptians shaped glass using the sand-core technique. After the Roman Empire improved glassblowing methods, glassware became widespread. When newly formed, glass appears soft and orange-red, but becomes hard and brittle once cooled. Adding minerals produces sapphire blue, emerald green, or amber hues, and trapped air bubbles serve as clues for dating.
